Unguja lodge was set up by Ralph Kruidering and Elies Hagedoorn. We were born and brought up in the Netherlands. Ralph studied electronic engineering and for many years worked in semiconductor and optical disc industry. Elies studied sociology and worked in higher professional education. We are both keen divers have travelled to many exotic destinations, so when we arrived in Zanzibar in 2003 we were quick to realize that it had great potential. We fell in love with the place because of the easy laid back pace of life, the pristine coastline, and of course the great diving. Over the next two years we returned at every opportunity getting to know the island better and exploring the coastline. In 2005 we found a plot and after lots of thoughts and planning,
We decided to leave our careers in the Netherlands, and move to Zanzibar with our children Thijs, Daan and Sara “Our idea was to create a special and intimate lodge, where guests could experience Zanzibar and the Indian Ocean. We wanted to make a place where it was possible to be in a peaceful unspoiled environment and yet enjoy all the modern comforts.” In 2007 we met with Gijs de Raadt of Moivaro Lodges and Tented Camps and decided to combine our strengths. Moivaro became a business partner.
